Getting Rid of Halitosis (Bad Breath)
Caused Due to Acid Reflux
When acid reflux occurs, partly digested foods are pushed towards the throat and mouth. Hence, it is pretty natural for the people who encounter acid reflux to suffer from bad breath (halitosis). Acid reflux is mainly caused by overeating and spicy foods. Because of your bad breath, it can be quite embarrassing for you to speak comfortably with anyone. Here are some things you can do to control acid reflux and get rid of halitosis:
Reduce the Occurrences of Reflux
The best way to reduce the occurrences of reflux is to stop consume larger meals. Instead of larger meals, you can have smaller meals throughout the day frequently to kill your hunger. This will effectively stop the food from coming back to the esophagus and bad breath caused by it.
Chew Food Properly
Saliva contains digestive enzymes that moisten the food and makes it possible for the food to easily pass through the esophagus to reach the stomach. The enzymes present in the saliva begin the breakdown process of fats and starch so that it can be easily absorbed or broken down in the stomach. Hence, chewing the food properly is very important to facilitate faster digestion. This will eventually put an end to reflux and bad breath.
Reduce Consumption of Trigger Foods
Foods that trigger acid reflux include saturated fats, greasy and heavy foods. When acid reflux occurs, such partly digested foods flow back to the throat and cause bad breath along with other symptoms. If you cut down on eating such foods, you won’t suffer from symptoms of acid reflux disease like heartburn, inflammation, coughing, burping and halitosis.
Improving your Digestion
Instead of eating foods that trigger acid reflux, you should eat foods that improve digestion. By doing this, you can easily prevent bad breath. Lean meats that are rich in amino acids that facilitate quick digestion, fruits like bananas, grapes, apples, oranges, and dark green vegetables are some foods that can greatly improve digestion. It will effectively stop the food from regurgitating to the mouth
Add Foods that Sweeten Your Breath
There are many food items that not only sweeten your breath but also at the same time prevent acid reflux symptoms. Drink licorice tea to relax the lining of your stomach and esophagus and also to sweeten your breath. You can also add basil and fresh mint in your foods. After your meals, you can chew on chlorophyll tablets and mint leaf to get rid of bad breadth and to promote better digestion.
