Comforting Your Esophagus After Acid Reflux
If you are habituated to eating large, spicy meals quite often, you can suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease which is also known as acid reflux disease. The lower esophageal sphincter present above the stomach does the job of keeping the food in the stomach. Partly digested acidic food can flow out of the stomach all the way to the throat and mouth causing you to experience burning sensation and discomfort in the chest and throat.
The acidic content present in the stomach can wear away the lining of your stomach and esophagus. Hence, you should be aware of the things that you should do to comfort your esophagus. Here are some tips on comforting your esophagus after acid reflux:
One of the best ways to comfort your esophagus is to include food items that are rich in carbohydrates in your meals. Such food items help your stomach to absorb most of the acidic content. Some of the best foods that are rich in carbohydrates include fruits and vegetables like potatoes, beans, cucumbers, apples, strawberries and pears, whole grain breads, seeds, legumes, etc.
Mostly people who overeat are the ones that suffer from acid reflux disease. Hence, it is advisable to change your eating pattern by having small meals five to six times in a day.
Foods that are known to digest slowly can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to loosen up. This in turn pushes the foods present in the stomach to move upwards towards your throat. Hence, you should eat foods that digest quickly. One way to do it is to cut down on the foods that are rich in fat as they take long time to digest.
Eliminate Trigger Foods
There are many foods that produce acid inside your stomach. You need to eliminate such trigger foods from your diet as they can deteriorate the lower esophageal sphincter. Quitting smoking and alcohol consumption, cut down on coffee and tea and all the citrus fruits and vegetables.
You should avoid hitting the bed very quickly after having the food. You should finish up your meal two or three hours before you go to your bed to sleep. When you sleep, you should keep your head elevated. This can be done by keeping one or two pillow under your head. By doing this, the acids will remain in the stomach and it will comfort your esophagus and strengthen it.
