We have all seen the commercials that mention someone who was perfectly healthy and then they went to the doctor for a regular check up and the doctor said that had high blood pressure and prescribed the medicine that is on the commercial and also told them to eat a balanced diet and get plenty of exercise. Well, if you are eating healthy and exercising regularly, you may start to wonder what more you can do. It may be helpful to look at what you are eating and to learn what foods may help to lower your blood pressure and what foods may need to be limited or avoided. This will help us all to stay as healthy as we possibly can and live long and happy lives.

Reduce Your Risk Through Nutrition, there are many things a person can do to lower their blood pressure, or lower their risk for getting high blood pressure. These things include: maintaining a healthy weight by reducing calories and avoiding sweets and fats. It may also help to lower the amount of salt consumed. This can be done by limiting fast food places in your diet and eating more fresh and whole foods instead of boxed or canned food products. Also, limiting the amount of alcohol consumed is a benefit and may help reduce blood pressure.

Some more ways to help lower or reduce blood pressure are: increase the amount of potassium you have in your diet. Some people with low potassium levels have been shown to have a higher risk for high blood pressure. Eating more fruits and vegetables with potassium as well as other nutrients may help lower these risks. Also, getting more calcium has been shown in some cases to help lower blood pressure, but calcium supplements may not be as good as just drinking milk. Also, eating foods with omega 3 fatty acids such as saltwater fish may help lower blood pressure. Eating seafood two or three nights a week may also help as well. Also, just watching how much of a certain food you eat may be helpful. It may help to eat more fruit for a dessert or snack and to remember to make meat part of the meal not the whole meal.

Following these guidelines and tips can help us all to make sure we are eating as healthy as we possibly can. So that when we go to the doctor for a check up we can make sure that we are eating the right foods and exercising regularly. If we make sure that our bodies are always in good health by helping to reduce our risk of certain conditions than we are helping ourselves to live longer and happier.
